  54.    Well, all is quiet here on the home front, and I sit in front
  55. of a terminal struggling for yet another snooze editorial.
  56.  
  57.    The problem with bad mail ending up at 1:1/1 seems to be
  58. tapering out, but we still get the odd glitch. A packet arrived
  59. this week with some 35 messages ... all undeliverable.  Ironically,
  60. they seemed to be errors generated by a program to place the snooze
  61. into an echo.  Hoisted by our own petard ...
  62.  
  63.    We are getting more and more articles via routed mail.
  64. Technically, all snooze articles are supposed to arrive as
  65. files, but with a few exceptions the routed mail is not a
  66. problem.  As a temporary guideline, we would like to suggest the
  67. following rules for routed mail articles.  (One of these days, a
  68. revision to AERTSPEC.DOC is going to get done).
  69.  
  70.   First of all, please include a tearline at the top and bottom
  71. of the actual article.  Often, writers have a note to us as
  72. editors at the top, and it is difficult to know what is meant as
  73. comment to us and what is meant for the snooze.  Say it is an
  74. article at the top, then put a tearline in.
  75.  
  76.    Secondly, anything coming in by netmail should NOT have any
  77. quotations, tables, or special formating.  Netmail nearly always
  78. needs to be reformated at this end, and articles that rely on
  79. specific pagination/line formating create problems and work.  If
  80. that is required, then send the articles in as files, as per
  81. ARTSPEC.  Netmail articles are limited to paragraphs of text.

  97.     GA-ECHOES the Fidonet echoes for the State of Georgia

  99. I would like to invite all sysops in the Peach State of Georgia (or
  100. our kissin' cousins on the border) to join us in a state wide hookup!
  101. The Georgia Echoes are currently running in Brunswick, Valdosta,
  102. Tifton, Thomasville, Albany, Athens, and Metro Atlanta.  We have been
  103. swapping mail among ourselves since June 4th and traffic has built to
  104. over 45 messages a week.

  139. Sysops" in issues 1024 & 1025 of the snooze...

  145. I just can't let this comment slide.  Things like  this happen all
  146. the  time.    Just  because  you  live  in the United States don't
  147. dismiss something like this "because it just can't happen here."

  149. This case sounds VERY SIMILAR to the Akron Anomaly BBS  trial that
  150. has been widely publicized on InterNet.  In case there are some of
  151. you that haven't heard about it yet, I have uploaded  a 12048 byte
  152. .ZIP  file  to  my  BOSSNODE  (Computer  Hotline  1:357/1)  called
  153. ARKONBBS.ZIP, (Ok, I misstyped it when I ZIPped  it up  >:-S ) for
  154. FREQ.

  174. up the protections of the courts, the constitutions of every
  175. country in the world, the united nations charter, and every
  176. common law protection since the Magna Carta.  I did not
  177. realize that becoming a nodelist manager carried such weight.

  181.    1.  Making threats against anybody for resorting to the court
  182. of the land is illegal in just about every country in the world.

  197. Ever get mad at the world of FidoNet today, and say 'if
  198. I were any older, they wouldn't treat me this way'... Well
  199. If you are, join Teen Net, the Network exclusivly for teens.

  201. In this net we'll discuss the everyday life of teenagers,
  202. school, love, problems, etc.

  204. Let's face it, probably at least 35% of FidoNet is made up
  205. of teens, like myself.  And, I would feel more at home, if
  206. FidoNet weren't so grown up.  Not to flame FidoNet, it's
  207. Great, but some teens don't want to look stupid to the rest
  208. of the world.

  231. Just a little addition, written down on Monday, June 28th.
  232.  
  233. The retirement mail of our "beloved" RC was a fake, obviously
  234. created by one of his supporters. That's what I call good style
  235. :-(

  237. So the situation is now that many nodes demand of their new
  238. assigned NC's to remove their new nodelist entries. Don't wonder
  239. if R24 is  significantly  smaller  with  NODEDIFF.183  or
  240. NODEDIFF.190.
  241.  
  242. What will happen to Fido in Germany is not clear. Maybe the
  243. major part of our region will quit the net if the old structures
  244. are not re-established in a certain period of time. If you want
  245. to support us (and I ask you to) feel free to Freq our
  246. alternative region file under the magic of REGION24 here at
  247. 2:2400/105 - just this AKA is supported.

  253. Farewell to FIDO?

  258. I run a BBS in a small town in rural Northern Arizona.  Or, to
  259. be more accurate, I run THE BBS here in Cottonwood. The nearest
  260. neighboring FidoNet BBS is 65 miles away in Flagstaff, where the
  261. Net is based, though there are two formerly-FidoNet BBSes in the
  262. next town over (Sedona, 25 miles toward Flagstaff from here).
  263.  
  264. Having originally run the first "INTERCEPTED" BBS in California
  265. (back in 1985, running the original FIDO BBS software) then
  266. having been out of BBSing for several years, I was surprised to
  267. see what FidoNet had become during my absence.
  268.  
  269. I started BRASS CANNON in 1991 with a 2400bps modem, and the

  272. extent of my echo participation was in two non-Fido echoes.
  273. Then in February, the new NEC for :304 sent me a message
  274. threatening to pull my Fido Node Address for "non-participation
  275. in the Net."
  276.  
  277. I explained to him in a return posting that A), it costs me more
  278. to call Flagstaff than it does to call MAINE; B), at 2400bps any
  279. echo is a costly proposition if it's not fed locally; C), I was
  280. in the middle of running Red Cross Disaster communications for
  281. severe flooding of the Verde River and I was only home to pack
  282. for possible evacuation (the BBS might be a moot point later
  283. that day), so "GET OFF MY BACK."
  284.  
  285. Fortunately, the floodwaters went down before the BBS did, and
  286. his Netmail response was "Just kidding, I wanted to get you more
  287. active." A couple of weeks later I got a v.32bis modem, and
  288. started picking up echoes that he was already carrying, such as
  289. OS/2 and SF. I asked for one that he didn't have, but after a
  290. couple of weeks let that one go; I told him that I would not be
  291. able to send money on top of the in-state Long Distance charges,
  292. but at least I would be "participating."
  293.  
  294. Then, last week, I got a Netmail message informing me (and other
  295. sysops in :304) that:
  296.  
  297.     With lack of support <total>, we have no alternative but to
  298.     shut down our echomail feeds. We will likely be taking a few
  299.     feeds for our own use, however the free lunch has ended.
  300.     If any of you feel there is any value in the feeds you receive,
  301.     then you can continue them at $25 per year per feed, a sum that
  302.     barely covers the telco costs.
  303.  
  304. Since I can't afford to pay $25 per year (per echo?) on top of
  305. in-state Long Distance for calls at 9600bps, that started me on
  306. a hunt for alternate feeds by the cutoff date (7-1-93). This
  307. has got me nowhere.
  308.  
  309. Not that I'm surprised. A couple of months ago I sent direct
  310. Netmail to a number of other BBSes to try and get a better feed
  311. for the SF echo (at that time, the SF feed was just unreliable
  312. -- as of this date, it's been a month since I got a feed of SF).
  313.  
  314. It is possible that some of the sysops I've Netmailed did send
  315. me replies, but since I have NEVER received a single routed
  316. Netmail message in the 18 months I've been in FidoNet (a number
  317. have been sent), not getting any now is no change.
  318.  
  319. I've even asked the NEC where I could get feeds -- his reponse was:
  320.  
  321.     The fate of the echoes is up to you. Sure, you have LD
  322.     costs, but SO DO I. Mine are EXTREMELY COSTLY as I am
  323.     feeding ALL OF YOU.
  324.     $25 per year is a paltry sum compared to what I have to pay.

  329. Well, my choice had been to ask where I could get  an
  330. out-of-state feed, and he just deamnded money, so I still have
  331. no idea were to look. Thus, it appears that BRASS CANNON will
  332. just not have any Fido echos after this week.

  334. In fact, since I haven't "supported the Net," I suppose the old
  335. threat to de-node me will come back into force.  C'est le
  336. guerre.  I'm a hour's drive away from Net 304 anyway. Maybe I
  337. should request to be an independent node while I still have an
  338. address to send mail from.

  341. OUTSIDE ARIZONA, for these echoes:

  370. Firstly, IMHO you're suffering from an over-abundance of capitals in
  371. your own title. Deem comments about glass houses and stone throwers
  372. included, or perhaps shouts of "KLANK!" and veiled references to
  373. cooking implements.

  375. What I'm writing about, though, is your huge beef with "Joe" having
  376. concealed a few details about his situation. You seem to view this as
  377. proof that he's got something to hide, has a problem, has an
  378. incompetent attorney, or indeed that he's guilty as all hell and is
  379. just some kind of alias-using troublemaker out to stir the pot.

  381. David, meboy, you've got an Attitude Problem. Pull your head in.

  383. If somebody is a bit touchy about their privacy -- for example,

  387. police -- let them keep it until such a time that they feel like

  392. guilty of some crime or other if they decide to exercise that right?

  409. Jeff, from my point of view, it looks like  you  tried
  410. (unsuccessfully) to initiate a hostile takeover of an echo. You
  411. wrote messages that were annoying and off topic, as declared by
  412. the moderator, and you wrote about it in other echos (which can
  413. also be considered annoying). You might be absolutely right in
  414. your crusade, but you're doing it all wrong. Upsetting the
  415. moderator isn't the best route to go, especially since he has
  416. the authority to cut your feed. And it doesn't matter if you're
  417. right or wrong, if you're being disruptive in an echo, the
  418. moderator can (and should) cut you from it.
  419.  
  420. By the way, did YOU decide the echo needed you as the moderator,
  421. or did the echo? If you decided it needed better/more/different
  422. moderation, you're out of luck, and will probably be called a
  423. fanatic, etc. If, on the other hand, the ECHO decided that
  424. better/different moderation was needed, and you were the man to
  425. do it, (although you handled it all wrong) you still have some
  426. options left.
  427.  
  428. You SHOULD have had users/sysops of that echo NETMAIL the
  429. current moderator complaining about the lack of moderation, and
  430. ask that you be made the new moderator, etc. If that didn't
  431. work... Drop the echo, get everyone supporting your cause to
  432. drop the echo and start your own. Basically, vote with your feet.

  436. "Madness in FidoLand...  Part I?"

  439. All seems quiet in FidoLand... or so it seems...  until one
  440. fateful Friday night...
  441.  
  442. Since I'm long distance and non-CM, I decide to poll my mail
  443. server for my usual assortment of mail.  Lo and behold, I
  444. receive a NODEDIFF filled with 193K of changes, mostly for
  445. Germany. What gives!?
  446.  
  447. Three days later... Polling for mail, I receive FidoNews, where
  448. I learn of the Region 24 madness that has happened. All within
  449. a matter of 96 hours, a section of the world has been changed.
  450. Bizarre.
  451.  
  452. These events have caused me to ask the following questions:
  453.  
  454. 1.  Will this madness continue?  I DON'T want to see 193K
  455. NODEDIFF files each week when a region suddenly decides to
  456. convert itself. I have to pay for my feed, and at 2400bps, it's
  457. nasty.
  458.  
  459. As well, I'm SICK of seeing ARC as the standard for FidoNet.
  460. Does ANYONE out there still use this ANTIQUATED software? I'd
  461. push for LHA to be the standard, due to the fact that FidoNews
  462. comes in that format, and IT'S FREE! No fees required for its
  463. use; it's perfect!
  464.  
  465. Considering it would have shrunk that 193K NODEDIFF down to
  466. around 130K...
  467.  
  468. 2.  Can regions just be taken over like that? I guess our
  469. current Policy (4.07 -- last I knew) allows this sort-of thing.
  470. There are no strict guidelines prohibiting or governing such
  471. behavior.
  472.  
  473. After seeing this, we NEED A NEW POLICY DESPERATELY! I'm asking
  474. that anyone out there who is SICK of this madness PLEASE speak
  475. up! I want to see FidoNet move forward, NOT BACKWARD...
  476.  
  477. Along the same lines, I'd like to see which regions have NetMail
  478. routing fully implemented. I know that at least in Regions 12
  479. and 13, mail routing has been successful...  (Coming from the
  480. regions I've written to via Fido.)
  481.

  483. so I don't have to go griping like this...
